To celebrate the 200th anniversary of Lachlan Macquarie’s installation as governor in New South Wales The Very Small Opera Company will present Fidelio, Beethoven’s only opera, dating from 1804. Set in colonial New South Wales , the story tells of a political prisoner set free by his faithful wife. It encompasses the themes of justice, the rights of prisoners and their dreams of freedom. The performance will be sung in English with period costumes and a multi-media presentation of life in the colony at the time of Macquarie .
