City unveils plans for Sydney’s Christmas celebrations
7 November 2011
Christmas in Sydney 2011 will be bigger and better than ever with 28 Christmas trees, thousands of sparkling lights, light projections on Sydney Town Hall and more than 1,200 new banners with brightly coloured festive stars.
Christmas decorations and events for the whole family will feature in the celebrations – starting with the annual Children’s Christmas Concert and Tree Lighting in Martin Place, and Christmas on the Green spectacular in Hyde Park.
Christmas family favourites will take place on Thursday 24 November, to be followed by four Village Christmas Concerts in some of Sydney’s village parks. For 2011 the City is unveiling a new Christmas design – a sparkling star – which will appear on banners lining our streets.
Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP said the City’s Christmas celebrations are about celebrating one of the most special times of the year. “Our celebrations this year will be bigger and better than ever. So I encourage all Sydney residents, workers and visitors to get involved in the celebrations taking place around the City this festive season,” Ms Moore said.
The City’s ever-popular Martin Place Christmas concert is back with a bang – with fireworks on top of city buildings. This year, TV celebrity Rhys Muldoon will MC, along with performances from Guy Sebastian, the Smurf Christmas Show, Jay Laga’aia, Lah-Lah’s BIG Live Band, and the Australian Girls Choir. Santa will arrive on his sleigh, accompanied by the Lord Mayor, who will light the iconic 21 metre high Christmas tree.
Families may prefer to take a picnic to Hyde Park to catch the new Dora the Explorer stage show ‘Dora’s Ballet Adventures’, take a swing dance lesson from Swing Patrol or enjoy the musical delights of the VOX Sydney Philharmonia Choir, plus performances from MC Justine Clarke.
Christmas 2011 concerts will be followed by a program of carolling choirs throughout Pitt Street Mall, serenading late-night shoppers as they enjoy the best of Sydney’s retail offerings and kick-start their Christmas shopping.
Around the City in late November and early December, a series of children’s village concerts in Rushcutters Bay, Rosebery, Alexandria and Surry Hills will also be hosted by Rhys Muldoon and feature live entertainment from some of Sydney’s best-loved bands, Swing Patrol dance lessons, Christmas carols, kids craft activities and a special visit from Santa Claus.
