AGNSW Australian Symbolism exhibition  is a new era for one of Australia’s great art collections

  • 12 May – 19 July 2012
  • Free

AGNSW first exhibition on Australian Symbolism with paintings and sculpture by key Australian artists, including Tom Roberts, Arthur Streeton, Charles Conder and Bertram Mackennal.

Art Gallery of NSW has devoted 25% more space to Australian art, with new works on display for the first time and many not seen in years. The new display includes numerous icons of Australian art and presents some 500 works across all media, spanning over 200 years.

Symbolist artists sought to suggest altered realities as conjured by the mind. To evoke ideas, dreams and sensations, they envisaged poetic landscapes, femme fatales, and figures drawn from spiritual and mythological terrains.
