The Archibald Prize 2009 was won by Guy Maestri for his portrait of indigenous singer, Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu.
Members, guests, artists and media gathered at the NSW Art Gallery in Sydneyfor the annual knees up, speeches and viewings connected to the presentation of the Archibald Prize .
Meanwhile VIP’s, including this year’s winner Guy Maestri, Nathan Rees, The Hon. Virginia Judge and Stephen Lowey were treated to a private viewing of this year’s winners and finalists.
Edmond Capon was his usual jovial self when addressing the ‘public’ guests as he spoke of the ‘checkered’ history of the Archibald. One very excited Guy Maestri could barely contain his excitement as winning Australia’s most coveted artistic award.
The 2009 Archibald Packers Prize was won by Paul Jackson for his portrait of Flacco, the comic creation of stage and film actor Paul Livingston
The 2009 Wynne Prize for best landscape painting of Australian scenery, or figure sculpture was won by Lionel Bawden for ‘The amorphous ones (the vast colony of our being)’.
The 2009 Sulman Prize for the best subject painting, genre painting or mural project by an Australian artist was won by Ivan Durrant for ‘ ANZAC Match, M.C.G.’
The Archibald Prize finalists and winner are on view at the NSW Art Gallery from the 7th March, 2009 and it will then tour regional centres.
