Art reaches celebrity status in Sydney
The 2010 announcements of the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Art prizes saw a massive turnout of photographers, film crews and news broadcasters at the AGNSW with representatives from all areas of the media.
The reception held in the evening at the Gallery then saw another 1500 invited guests stampede in to celebrate with the winners, finalists and artists.
Edmund Capon, Director of the AGNSW since 1978, in his usual jovial style bounded onto the stage to re-announce the winners (you’d have to be living under a very large rock to not have known already) with an attention getting “Quiet down you rabble” which saw the entire room immediately fall silent. Would think there are few major Gallery Directors in the world who would address a gathering in this manner. But this was not just any Gallery Director, this was Edmund Capon, whose quirky sense of humour and enthusiasm has endeared him to everyone. This, married with his untiring work has put the AGNSW on the world map. Rumours constantly abound as to Edmund’s possible retirement some time soon but let’s all hope he hangs in there for as long as it is humanly possible.
A recent study showed that the arts are now very high on the agenda for Australians with nine out of every ten either having been directly involved in an artistic process or attending an ‘arts’ event. So get in the queue to view the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Finalists and Winners works.
