FAMOUS BRITISH ARTISTS, GILBERT & GEORGE IN SYDNEY FEBRUARY 12
Gilbert & George share our commitment to art in daily life and art for the public through their concepts of ‘living sculpture’ and ‘Art for All’.
John Kaldor, Director, Kaldor Public Art Projects
You are invited to meet Gilbert & George, two of the most famous British artists. They will be in Sydney for the first time since John Kaldor brought them to Australia in 1973.
In 1973 Gilbert & George presented their The Singing Sculpture at the Art Gallery of New South Wales and the National Gallery of Victoria. They wore tailored suits and painted their hands and faces in bronze metallic paint, moving slowly along to the tune of ‘Underneath the Arches’ for five hours at a time, circling like music-box figures.
A mesmerising event, The Singing Sculpture presented the artists as ‘living sculpture’, blurring the boundaries between art and life and breaking new ground for artists of their generation. Gilbert & George were like nothing seen or heard at the time.
Almost four decades later, Gilbert & George are like ‘old masters’ of contemporary art, celebrated around the world for their instantly recognisable photo-montage works in vivid colour and enormous scale. In 2007 the Tate Modern honored the artists with the largest retrospective exhibition ever created for the gallery, which continued to tour internationally until last year.
Gilbert & George are here to celebrate the 40 years: Kaldor Public Art Projects exhibition at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
