Wilderness – Balnaves contemporary painting at Art Gallery of New South Wales
March 5 – May 23
This exhibition considers how nature and landscape continue to preoccupy contemporary painters. Not nature based on observation, however, but a realm of vivid imaginary landscapes, creatures both natural and unnatural, and humans who seem to emerge like wood sprites from the forest. The ‘wild’ here is found in the mind of the artists.
Includes works by Del Kathryn Barton, Daniel Boyd, Andrew Browne, Stephen Bush, Tony Clark, Julie Fragar, Louise Hearman, Fiona Lowry, Nigel Milsom, James Morrison, Alex Pittendrigh, Mary Scott, Megan Walch and Michael Zavros.
SPECIAL EVENTS
Free artist forum 2pm – 3.30pm, Saturday 6 March
Wilderness is a location in the imagination as much as it is a physical and tangible place, a wild and dangerous zone conceived in opposition to civilisation. Join artists, Michael Zavros, Del Kathryn Barton, Daniel Boyd, Julie Fragar and Mary Scott, as they explore the themes of the exhibition and talk about their creative practice, ideas and concepts with curator, Wayne Tunnicliffe.
