CRITICAL MOMENTS essays and reviews on art in Australia Jeff Makin and Art Equity have pleasure in inviting you to the Sydney Launch of CRITICAL MOMENTS essays and reviews on art in Australia by Jeff Makin at Art Equity on Thursday 1st December, 2011 6 – 8pm.
Jeff Makin is an artist whose influence looms large over the Australian artistic landscape. As a painter he has received many accolades; his inclusion in the important collections of Australia testament to his skill and importance as an image maker.
Makin is a champion of the Australian landscape tradition, ignoring fashion and always searching for the truth of the matter. He has a deep understanding and love of this land. With over 70 solo exhibitions in a 40 year career, his place as one of Australia’s prominent image makers is assured. Now his influence is acknowledged beyond easel, for Makin is one of our great thinkers, his understanding, teaching and selfless encouragement of generations has made him the Godfather to many of the leading contemporary artists today.
It is a truism, that for an artist to be regarded truly great there needs to be a depth of understanding of what pictures mean, not just how they look. The “le grand” fountain pen of Jeff Makin has, over decades, commented, cajoled, encouraged and challenged Australia’s perception of itself and in doing so, has asked questions of its’ artists. Not always popular, the critic shouldn’t be- this has not been an exercise in barracking; but an examination of the good, the bad and sometimes the ugly- and from this challenge to the work, the good artists become exceptional. Moments of true historical importance come so rarely. CRITICAL MOMENTS – essays and reviews on art in Australia; 320 pages and 40 years in its creation. On December 1st, Sydney has an opportunity to celebrate this remarkable career in paint and ink.
CRITICAL MOMENTS is published by Macmillan Art Publishing; supported by Leonard Joel Specialist Auctioneers and Valuers, and JB Were Private Wealth Management and the Art Equity launch by The Balvenie Scotch Whisky.
