Manly Art Gallery & Museum (across the harbour from Sydney)  is hosting an  exhibition of the provocative, compelling and frequently controversial works of the acclaimed surrealist-absurdist artist James Guppy.

The exhibition will be launched at Manly Art Gallery & Museum at 6pm on Friday 3 December 2010 by Tony Bond OAM, Assistant Director, Curatorial & Head Curator International Art, Art Gallery of NSW.

James Guppy, a contemporary British-born, Australian-resident artist now living in Byron Bay, explores the private dreams and nightmares of life in the twenty first century, investigating love and power, the body, physical identity, gender, sexuality and taboos – often with a surreal, humorous and absurdist twist.

James Guppy has exhibited widely in Sydney, Brisbane, New York and Texas, the current touring exhibition being developed in celebration of the 20th anniversary of his first professional solo exhibition.

‘Seduction and Subversion: The art of James Guppy 1989 – 2009’ is a Tweed River Art Gallery touring exhibition.
