Onya guys for a great Australia Day 2011 at Cockle Bay, Darling Harbour Sydney
Australia Day 2011 had Sydney sweltering through a January scorcher but a little heat was not about to deter the masses amassing at Cockle Bay, Darling Harbour for Australia’s birthday celebrations.
Performers danced, sang and whooped it up on the floating stage as towering stilt walkers strutted on land meandering around eager onlookers encircling the assorted array of buskers.
All corners of the globe were represented amongst the the carpet of faces attired in everything from their own national costumes to all arrays of our national costume, which appears to be anything crazy so long as it has our flag represented on it somewhere.
The formal speeches, delivered by the NSW Governor, Professor Marie Bashir and NSW Premier, Kristina Keneally encompassed the usual “what a fabulous place Australia is” with additional accolades straddling the diversity of our population. Australia Day award recipients were introduced along with their credentials and outlining their achievements. (Australian of the Year Awards list below).
Kristina Keneally, Professor Bashir and award recipients then proceeded towards their their after party gig at the Convention Centre amid an entourage of ‘minders’. Guests at the party were left sipping their drinks on the balcony while Premier Keneally dallied with her fan base skirting the invisible red carpet. She poised and posed for the flotilla of cameras and phones held aloft, nursed babies and held conversations – so reminiscent of another ‘Lady’ who outshone her Prince.
MiSociety can’t fill you in on the Premier’s State Reception at the Convention Centre as, even though we were accredited for the day, a lady bearing the name ‘Protocol’ briskly informed us that absolutely no media was being admitted to the tax payer funded shindig.
The fireworks of course were stunning, the yacht sail-by just beautiful, the mix and presentation of the accompanying film and music, the tribute to Joan Sutherland and the organisation of the entire day did the organisers, producers and managers of the celebrations proud.
By nightfall there was barely a spare space to be had anywhere on the foreshore below us and along with our praise for the deliverance of the Australia Day 2011 program we must add a huge ‘well done’ to an extremely well behaved mass of Australians and visitors.
