The Australian Ensemble (Music Performance Unit UNSW Sydney NSW 2052) are first rate with their concerts offering both traditional and contemporary performances. Do yourself a favour and lift the lid on what these talented Australian musicians have to offer. – MiSociety
The Australia Ensemble always enjoys ending the year with a bang, and 2010 is no exception. Ligeti’s Six bagatelles for wind quintet is a masterly piece of parody that brings favourite guest artists Diana Doherty (oboe), Robert Johnson (horn) and Andrew Barnes (bassoon) into the series. Mozart’s Eine kleine nachtmusik has never before featured in the Australia Ensemble’s series, and it will no doubt be refreshing to hear this oft-heard work played to such an outstanding standard.
Matthew Hindson is certainly one of Australia’s current leading composers and has been commissioned by Justice Jane Mathews to write a substantial work for the full ensemble to celebrate the end of the 31st season. The year then draws to a close with another favourite, Camille Saint-Saens’s Carnival of the Animals and all the nostalgia, fun and quirkiness it offers.
Following the performance will be the launch of the 2011 season with the now-traditionally offering of sparkling wine and handmade chocolate truffles, closing the 31st season at UNSW’s Clancy Auditorium in appropriate style.
