Twiggy

Twiggy came to epitomise the swingin’ sixties and was arguably the world’s first supermodel (although Wikipedia – and Janice Dickinson – say otherwise).Philip Priestley’s Twiggy: The Face of ’66 is a fabulous documentary about the woman who made androgyny beautiful. It screens as part of From Twiggy to Westwood: Great British Fashion on Film, a tribute to some of the pioneers who redefined the runways and glossy rag trade magazines. The sophisticated doco In Vogue: The Editor’s Eye explores the reputed ‘ice queen’ Anna Wintour’s resuscitation of a flagging US fashion mag. Stéphane Carrel’s Paul Smith, Gentleman Designer profiles the man who adds a touch of quirk to the classics, while Anna Gravelle’s British Style Genius: Breaking the Rules – Fashion Rebel Look celebrates boundary-pushing designers like Vivienne Westwood, John Galliano and the late Alexander McQueen. The evolution of British style owes much to these illuminaries. As Smith once said, “I think that if you could put Britishness in a jar it would be just a sort of inventiveness, a creativeness, and a quirkiness that is all embracing.”

From Twiggy to Westwood: Great British Fashion on Film runs from Sat 31 Aug to Sat 7 Sep and is presented in partnership with Melbourne Spring Fashion Week. Admission to In Vogue: The Editor’s Eye is free – tickets are available from the Tickets & Information Desk on the day of each screening.
