Australian Designed Products Blitz the Field at Australian International Design Awards 2012
Australian International Design Awards, presented by Good Design Australia, is Australia’s oldest and most prestigious design awards. Australian designers have a reputation for being amongst some of the best in the world so the annual Australian International Design Awards are heralded with much anticipation. For 2012 the awards ceremony was held to a capacity audience at the City Recital Hall in Sydney with the ‘afters’ celebration at the Ivy Ballroom.
Lee Lin Chin, news presenter for SBS (who is also much lauded for her quixotic fashion statements) professionally shepherded along a fulsome list of awards while proceedings were kept light and entertaining. From 105 Finalists, 37 received the prestigious Design Award™ in recognition of design and innovation excellence
Deepsea Challenger submarine design team, lead by James Cameron, took out the Australian International Design Award of the Year for 2012 with the ‘Design Award — Best in Category’ going into the kitchen with the Garject Garlic Crusher.

The Ivy Ballroom, post official proceedings, was quickly filled with excited award winners and guests who all crowded around the ‘catwalks’ of models of the winning designs. Here there was everything on display including the said garlic crusher alongside bicycles (pedaled and electric), a compact metal detector, vacuum cleaners, a pipe centralizer, medical equipment, and even a Bung Plug Stock Sealing Device (sounds painful).
Australian design innovation is most certainly still alive and very well and MiSociety had a great time meeting and chatting amongst an extraordinarily interesting and engaging group of the best our country has to offer. Hearty congratulations to all of you.
Finalists and winners from previous years will be on public exhibition at Westfield shopping centres in Sydney from 2-24 August 2012.
