Allie Campbell wins 2012 Bald Archy Prize – art wins out and how to have the last laugh
Allie Campbell has never entered an art competition before. As Allie was announced as the 2012 winner of the Bald Archy Art Prize at the Independent Theatre in North Sydney she, along with her attending family, yelped for joy. Allie won the coveted prize for her ‘portraits’ of Julia Gillard and Tony Abbott framed in the bed pans that were joyfully donated by hospital staff when they knew what she wanted them for.
Allie had previously tendered a work of Kevin Rudd framed in a like fashion for a group exhibition at a (we won’t name it) gallery and was told “we don’t want that ‘rubbish’ here”! Seems this gallery’s curators have their own ideas of censorship in art with Allie being so upset by this reaction that she didn’t paint again for three months! Fortunately Allie did take up the brushes again and had the last laugh by winning one of Australia’s most adored art prizes.
The Bald Archy Prize is the known internationally as the only art prize judged by a sulphur crested cockatoo named Maud, who resides with the Bald Archy Prize founder and Director Peter Batey. The ‘Baldies’ are about taking the ‘micky’ (to be nice) out of art and some of the snobbery that surrounds it. The Bald Archy Prize is also about Australian larrikinism, good natured irreverence and cheeky humour incorporating the ability to giggle at not only the caricatures and their ‘messages’ but at ourselves along the way.
Long live the Bald Archys – it is one of the few ‘competitions’ in Australia where mirth is the outcome and good old Aussie wit still survives.
For the first time the Bald Archys have their Sydney showing north of the Harbour Bridge at the beautifully re-furbished Independent Theatre in North Sydney before touring regionally. Bald Archy Prize on show Independent Theatre North Sydney details
