Sydney’s 2012 Biennale blast off parties feed all the senses
Sydney’s 18th Biennale 2012 was launched with great anticipation at a huge day long media event kicking off at the Museum of Contemporary Art then travelling to the various venues. The title of this year’s Biennale – all our relations – was explained as reflecting the curatorial premise of its artistic directors present, Catherine de Zegher and Gerald McMaster.
Sydney’s 18th Biennale 2012 set a pacey social scene with launch parties all over town that would have been the envy of any Sydney Fashion Week. Judging by the strong turnout at each event ‘Art’ is now the ‘new black’.
Art Gallery of New South Wales hosted the first party of the week in stately style in keeping with the gallery’s surroundings. Art Gallery of New South Wales’ new director, Michael Brand, welcomed guests and invited them to view the AGNSW Biennale contributing exhibition subtitled ‘In Finite Blue Planet’.
2012 Biennale’s rolling party moved the next evening to the Sydney’s Museum of Contemporary Art. Here there was a real buzz reflecting that the gallery is still in honeymoon mode following its newly opened extension. Invitees were clearly reluctant to leave as they massed on the Foundation Hall’s outside terrace for drinks and canapés post having enjoyed viewing creative artworks over two levels of the gallery.
Carriageworks rounded off the week’s activities with their launch event laying on a spread of food on a massively long table reminiscent of a feast from a classic 15th century European painting. Amply fed guests were then able to contemplate at leisure site-specific installations by Ann Veronica Janssens as the first week of celebrating the 18th Biennale drew to a close.
