Bob Hawke joins the octogenarian club
The old silver bodgie, Bob Hawke, has made the big 80 and he threw a dinner party at the Bennelong Restaurant in Sydney’s Opera House to celebrate.
Lots of notables came along to pay homage to the former Prime Minister of Australia including Kim Beasley and his wife Susan Annus, Bill and Imelda Roache of Nutrimetics fame and Bob’s grandson David Dillon with his girlfriend Andrea Dixon. Others included Jeannie Pratt, Federal Minister Simon Crean, Maxine McKew, Greg Combe with his partner Melissa Park. John Singleton arrived with his current flame, Yvette Hartmand and making a late entrance was the current Prime Minister himself Kevin Rudd who told us that Bob was good for another 80 years.
Arriving unannounced in a tiny little blue car was another former Prime Minister Paul Keating with his friend Julia Newbold who both raced up the stairs before the media spotted them.
Vince Sorrenti M.C.’d the night and there was a John Howard lookalike and a stripper. Sadly I missed the cutting of the giant golf ball shaped cake. John Singleton presented Bob with a race horse called ‘Sparkle Arkle’ for his birthday.
Wheelchair bound Margaret Whitlam arrived late and incidentally I went to Gough Whitlam’s 90th which was certainly a much more sedate affair – but then there is only one Bob Hawke.
