Malcolm and Lucy Turnbull, Tanya Plibersek and Todd McKenney, unite for the Bobby Goldsmith Auction
Bobby Goldsmith died in 1984 being one of the first Australians to fall victim to an AIDS–related illness. From Goldsmith’s untimely death sprang the Bobby Goldsmith Foundation (BGF) that raises funds for Australian’s living with HIV. BGF is Australia’s longest running HIV charity and today assists 1500 clients.
Alexander McQueen designed seven inch stilettos, donated by Eric Nair, Creative Director of the World AIDS Day Dinner, were amongst the huge swag of silent auction items up for grabs at Sydney’s Otto Ristorante at Cowper Wharf , Woolloomooloo, to raise funds for the BGF.
A seven night holiday in a six-star mansion in Phuket, art works from the likes of Charles Blackman and Emily Pwerle plus a smorgasbord of other star items were up for the bidding. Refreshingly, the organisers for this fundraiser had no need to raid the coffers of commercial sporting memorabilia for this do!
Todd McKenney MC’d the auction with infectious enthusiasm geeing up the crowd to put in their bids including those for dinner with his good self at Quay Restaurant. So intent was McKenney to ensure the success of the fundraiser that MiSociety snapped him ‘rehearsing his lines’ under a Cowper Wharf lamp post.
Malcolm Turnbull, Federal Shadow Treasurer, and Tanya Plibersek, Federal Minister for Human Services, put aside their current political sparing to present a united and good humored front from the podium.
Despite the seriousness of the cause there was much jocularity swirling around the congenial participants here who were determined to make the evening a ripper of an event.
Otto’s generously provided the venue and canapés, with Wild Rock Wines gifting the wines so that, unlike some events hanging their hats on a charity, 100% of the money raised went to the Bobby Goldsmith Foundation.
