Max Gillies, the High Priest of Impersonation and Satire breaks into GOD’s ZONE of Politics.
GODZONE showcases Max Gillies singularly portraying the cream (homogenized?) of today’s Australian political leaders. Max lumps them all into an evening basket of great fun where none of them are safe. Seeing these characters in this light we couldn’t help but ponder what basket cases they can appear to be. Tony Graziani knows how to throw a party and when it’s for the opening of his new glitzy car showroom you know it will be big. And big is was. They glistened and they shone in a myriad of colours and they were some of the most stunning ’toys’ any party could produce. Of course we are talking the Porsche, Ferrari, Maserati, Lamborghini, Mercedes, BMW and Bentley cars that lined up to welcome us in this enormous showroom. Continue Reading »

LL Wine & Dine drums up a lion of a party in Kings Cross
LL Wine & Dine launch party was no tame little affair. Co-inciding with Chinese New Year the boys pulled out all stops and in rolled the Australian Yau Kung Mun Dragon and Lion Dancing Association to create a huge stir in Llankelly Place, Kings Cross. The lettuce munching Chinese ‘lions’ pranced and danced and even climbed a pole while the drummers drummed and fireworks exploded. What fun! Continue Reading »

You Only Live Twice – the Incredibly True Story of the Hughes Family – Documentary Preview and CD Launch of 21st Century Blues – Dick and Christa Hughes
Spying ‘Hughes’ Talent
MiSociety was privileged to be invited to the Slide Bar in Sydney to view a remarkable documentary ‘You Only live Twice’ based on the incredible lives of four generations of the Hughes family.
The documentary centres on Richard (Dick) Hughes Senior who, from the 1940s to the 1980s was one of the world’s most celebrated foreign correspondents. Richard Hughes was based for a good deal of his intriguing life in Hong Kong on behalf of the Sunday Times of London. ‘Dick’ scored one of the greatest scoops of his era when in 1956 he managed to locate Guy Burgess and Donald Maclean, two members of the Cambridge spy ring who had defected to Moscow – an act that still cuts into the psyche of the British Establishment. The documentary affords Dick Senior an air of mystery with his connection to the murky world of spies. Not surprising for a man who was a chum of James Bond creator Ian Fleming and who was the basis of the fictional character “Dikko” Henderson in the Bond story ‘You Only Live Twice’.
The younger Dick Hughes, also a journalist, is featured in the documentary in his more well known guise as a lauded jazz pianist.
The documentary includes a portrayal of the amazing talents of Dick’s daughter singer/actress and one off, full on performer, Christa Hughes, formerly lead singer ‘KK Juggy’ from Aussie rock band Machine Gun Fellatio.
On a memorable night family, friends and guests (but no perceived spies) were treated to an incredable live performance from Christa and Dick joined on stage by one of the great jazz trumpeters of Australia, Bob Bernard and world renowned harmonica player, Jim Conway. As an extra thrill we got a sneak preview during the after party of a new CD by Christa and Dick called 21st Century Blues, featuring a series of jazz and blues classics performed originally by such musical icons as Bessie Smith, Jelly Roll Morton and Memphis Slim. The CD will be officially launched at the Basement in Sydney on February 22.
The documentary “You Only Live Twice’, directed by Brendan Young and produced by Ruth Cullen, will be screened by the ABC on 9:25pm Thursday, 18 Feb 2010 – make a diary date to watch it, after all – you only live once.
