Billich Gallery celebrates their 25 years in Sydney with a ’Myrthday’
Charles and Christa Billich gathered their family, friends and art collectors together at the majestic tri level Billich Gallery in The Rocks to celebrate the Gallery’s 25th birthday in Sydney. The Billiches are renown for their hospitable and entertaining parties and this one, amusingly dubbed ‘25th Myrthday’ matched the milestone it was marking.
The Billich Gallery, housed in the historic ‘Sailors Home’ was positively glowing as a very interesting and eclectic stream of guests continued to flow through the doors and into the remarkable gallery space.
Dame Edna made the trip from Moonee Ponds to join in the charismatic soiree and to celebrate with her long time friends Christa and Charles. This night though, ‘The Dame’ was more soberly attired as her alter ego Barry Humphries.
Bessie Bardot and Geoff Barker were accompanied by their debutant (and absolutely gorgeous) little cutie daughter Bluebell adding to the sea of notable faces. Even the band contributed to the visuals as it included a very rarely seen musical animal ‘the Sousaphone’.
Within the grandeur of the Billich Gallery stands a gleaming grand piano. This night the piano was be-draped in an ‘animal’ rug to facilitate the positioning of two nude artist models complete with their respective musical instruments. These life models were the subjects to be sketched by Charles. Amongst a flotilla of flashing cameras, mobile phones and the encircling crowd Charles produced three drawings with the most amazing skill and speed to the awe of all.
As the ‘official’ party wound down family and friends of Christa and Charles threaded up through the gallery upper levels to the Billich private VIP rooms where we partied on to the amazing sounds of Felix Cuba (from Bolivia) playing sing-a-long songs on his Pan Flute till the early hours.
Charles Billich is an internationally acclaimed artist with his works gracing many ‘halls of fame’ globally. The story of Charles Billich’s life is an enthralling tale – we know as we wrote a profile on him some years ago. Currently a documentary following Charles’ life and travels over the last few years is nearing completion – is should make for compelling viewing. Here’s to the next 25 years of the Charles (and Christa) Billich Gallery.
