MiSociety couldn’t make it but The Dunthorne’s did – here’s their take on events.
The Billich Gallery at China White Cartier Polo 25th Year Anniversary at The Guards Polo Club, Windsor Great Park, England.
Sunday 26th July 2009 saw a great royal event in Windsor Great Park culminating in an International Polo Match between England and Argentina. It was a great sporting, social and artistic event.
Charles Billich’s inspirational and action-packed exhibition of “The World of Polo” brought visitors from around the world to a packed marquee in the tented village. The pictures: drawings, paintings and prints alluded both to Charles’s wide-ranging imagination and the ancient oriental birth of polo – an unusual and thought-provoking approach. These pictures, including a centrepiece signed by the competing polo teams, were visited and much admired by the players, polo followers and art collectors.
Champagne flowed freely as the ‘Apres Polo’ set posed and strutted.
Like ski-ing, yachting and surfing, possession of the right clothes and accessories is as important (some might say more important) as any ability in the sport concerned. Owning a string of polo ponies runs to a seven figure sum before you start flying them round the world so sometimes the acquisition of appropriate accessories including original paintings is a good place to start.
On Smith’s Lawn packed grandstands watched enthralled as the powerful and good-looking Argentina Team ran out 12-5 goal winners of the Coronation Cup . His Royal Highness Prince Charles presented the trophy (not easy to get this one on the mantlepiece – Ed) to Adolfo Cambiaso who along with his team-mate Facundo Pieres are two of the world’s best players.
Fashions on the Field (U.K style)
Overcast weather did not did not discourage the ‘Fashionistas’ from putting on a memorable display. For young ladies, short summer dresses (and little else) were popular with all – although the soft going did not suit the accompanying high heels! For the young man about town -
and country – white jeans, over-sized watch (possibly by Cartier) and expensive, branded (and unnecessary) sunglasses were the approved apparel. In recession-hit England it was also very apparent that the ever popular red Ferrari was much less in evidence than last year.
The evening was finished with a flourish. China White’s ‘Players and Grooms Disco Tent’ providing an appropriate outlet for youthful energy and appropriate socializing.
Charles and Christa announced their intention to return to Windsor Polo next year with a larger exhibition. For those keen to see these wonderful paintings this year there will be a further opportunity at the St Tropez Open Du Soleil Polo Tournament, France on Saturday 29th to Monday 31st August.
