Kung Hei Fat Choy – Chinese New Year 2012 Dragon Fires up in Sydney
The Year of the Dragon 2012 has roared into Sydney spewing forth a kaleidoscope of colour and events and drumming in the largest Chinese New Year Festival outside of China itself. Sydney’s Belmore Park for the 2012 Festival public opening was alive and jammed with not only those of Chinese origin and Sydneysiders but peoples from the four corners of our earth.
The Lion Dance (always a big favourite) saw the performers prancing and dancing post the traditional ‘eye painting’ of these colourful characters. Dance troupes from the Cheng Du region in China delighted the crowd with performances unlike any seen before in Australia.
Lawrence Leung, an Ambassador for the Festival, gave a very witty speech with fellow Ambassador and celebrity chef Adam Liaw, encouraging all to celebrate both modern and traditional Chinese food, art and culture.
This was just the beginning of what turned out to be a fun and very entertaining night. After the excitement of Belmore Park we VIPs were whisked off by bus to Bistro 80 in The Star for a Reception hosted by the Lord Mayor of Sydney, Clover Moore MP. Bistro 80 was decked out in red and yellow creating a true Chinese experience where yummy Chinese food and some excellent wines flowed around a convivial and ‘Kung Hei Fat Choy’ crowd.
Chinese New Year in Sydney 2012 has over 80 events lined up including art, music, workshops and of course all that wonderful Chinese cuisine. What’s on CNY Sydney info and also the Sydney Chinese New Year 2012 website.
