Deadly Awards 2012 – Get Your Vote in Now! Voting Closes 9 September 2012
Deadlys Awards 2012 were launched at an up-beat event held at the SBS headquarters in Sydney. The launch event at SBS Studios announced nominations for the finals and also officially fired the starting gun for the Australian public to vote for their choice of winners. The formal proceedings were accompanied by live performances from two of this year’s finalists, Brisbane based singer Thelma Plumb and Sydney’s hip hop artist Sky’High (aka Skh’ai Gerrey). The Deadlys, founded by Gain Jones of Vibe Australia and produced by his company, this year has 26 award categories across music, sport, the arts and the community which are open to the public for voting. The 2012 Deadlys will also include three categories in the non-voting award categories, the Deadly Hall of Fame. New categories this year include the Marcia Langton Award for Lifetime Achievement in Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander Leadership, and Lifetime Contribution to the Stolen Generations.
Karla Grant from SBS’s Living Black and actor Luke Carroll, hosting the occasion in lively style, reminded guests that the 2012 Deadlys will be the 18th since inception but will also mark 10 years of collaboration between the Deadlys and their highly valued broadcast partner SBS.
The Deadlys winners will be announced at a the Deadlys Awards gala night to be held at the Sydney Opera House on 25 September 2012. Joseph Skrzynski, Chair of SBS told guests that judging by past Deadly Award nights he had witnessed the Deadly finals are one hell of a celebratory party that truly rocks the Opera House.
Here’s the thing Australia – The Deadly Awards is a genuinely good news story not a manufactured one as it heralds genuine achievement and recognition of the pursuit of excellence for and by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders across a broad range of activities and endeavours.
