FESTIVAL – Sydney Comedy Festival 2010

April 19, 2010toMay 9, 2010

  • 19 April to 9 May 2010
  • Comedy for all ages

The 6th Sydney Comedy Festival comes laden with promises of more fun and laughter for more Sydneysiders than ever before!   New venues, new late night shows, new outdoor free events, a new dedicated program especially for kids plus a star studded line up of comedy’s international superstars and home grown champions!
Running from 19 April to 9 May 2010, the Festival officially goes on sale tomorrow releasing tickets for a star studded group of international stand up performers. Between them, they have won awards at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and the HBO US Comedy Arts Festival, sold more tickets than any act ever at the Edinburgh Fringe, sold out massive arenas, been a character on Seinfeld, a voice on Family Guy, hung out with Puff Daddy and won awards for their TV comedy documentaries.
It is with great delight that the SCF announces the Festival debut of the irrepressible Jason Byrne (IRE), the legendary Dom Irrera (US) and the emerging star that is Shane Mauss (US).
Joining the debutantes are some of the Festival’s favourite headliners including; Ross Noble (UK), Pablo Francisco (USA), The Pajama Men (USA), Des Bishop (IRE) and David O’Doherty (IRE).
“It is an exciting time for comedy in this city with some of the truly great names of the world comedy circuit setting up shop for three weeks from 19 April to 9 May.   We’ll kick the whole thing off in style with our Gala Opening at Sydney Comedy Festival Cracker Night on 20 April and along with what people have come to expect of the Festival, we are expanding our program to include more venues, more shows, free public events and most significantly, a dedicated and quite hilarious children’s program.”  Jorge Menidis, Sydney Comedy Festival Director
The Festival’s Children’s program will play out during the day at a number of Festival venues and will present performances, workshops, storytelling and much more in a diverse program guaranteed to make kids and their parents laugh. The Kids Gigs Program will burst with all the aplomb of a water bomb across the festival precinct in 2010.
Another new event is the inaugural Great Jugglers Jamboree, a free event inviting jugglers of all shapes and sizes, skill and devices to come together in workshops, performances and a winner take all competition for the best juggler in the land!
Finally, the Festival is set to unleash its new look and is in search of the perfect name for their new mascot. Described as a bright, happy and at times mischievous little character with a smile as wide as the Sydney Harbour Bridge and hair as free flowing as the sails on the Sydney Opera House. Adopted Geordie and all round nice guy played to thousands upon thousands in 2009 during his arena tour and is back for some more intimate unscripted performances in 2010.

As a bona fide celebrity in his adopted home in Ireland having won many awards for his television productions, Des Bishop is now ready to embark on his first-ever national stand up tour of Australia.  In mastering his acerbic observations on life in Australia , Des is sure to uncover many parts of our own identity we don’t even know ourselves.

Jason is the highest selling act in the history of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and is also the highlight of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival’s televised Gala every year.  The highly anticipated Sydney Comedy Festival debut for this hugely energetic and exciting performer will sell out.

The winner of the Edinburgh Fringe 2008 if.comedy (formerly Perrier) award David O’Doherty returns to Sydney with his brand new show David O’Doh-Party.  Very bad at describing his stand up comedy, this new show will be a bit like when you are going down a flight of stairs in the dark, and you think there are two steps left, but there only turns out to be one.

The Italian mobster uncle you never had, all round wise guy and a legend in the American club scene. Did we mention he was on Seinfeld and The Big Lebowski too?

After 5 sell out shows in 2009 and millions of YouTube hits the master of voices and sound effects returns showcasing the best impressions you will ever hear of Michael J. Fox, Jackie Chan and of course Don Fontaine aka the movie voice over guy!

Renowned for his ability to transfix people worldwide with his incredible stories, and for men proposing to their partners during his show but perhaps more notorious for missing his flight the last two times he’s been to Australia!

This year alone the duo from Albuquerque have sold out in Melbourne, London, Edinburgh and two shows at the Virgin Mobile Metro in Sydney. The most in demand comedy duo around right now with a new show! Get a babysitter this is not a show for the kids!

The underground comedy hit of 2009. Pronounced “Moss” not “Mouse”. You may have seen him earlier this year at the Sydney Comedy Store he performed a handful of dates all of which were sold out, you may have seen him partying in Surry Hills or on Conan O’Brien, he’s been on the show multitudes of times and was a smash hit at the 2009 Just for Laughs, Montreal.

The Opening Night Gala of the Festival, Cracker Night has developed into Sydney ’s biggest annual night of laughter spanning across multiple venues in the city. To be staged on 20 April, the pinnacle event of the Sydney Comedy Festival promises to be the best sampler of comic fare in 2010.
