ASCA Health Care Professionals Workshop Canberra

  • Friday 29 October 2010, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm
  • Westpac, 11-15 London Circuit, Canberra

ASCA workshop for health care professionals. ASCA is dedicated to ensuring that the more than 2 million Australian adults surviving child abuse in our community receive the care and support they need.

This workshop is designed for health care workers who see adult survivors in their work but may not have received training specific to survivors’ needs, or who may require a refresher course.   The training recognises that working with survivors of childhood abuse requires specialised training and that doing such work is challenging for health professionals. Even though knowledge about the understanding of the biological and interpersonal consequences of childhood trauma has exploded over the past two decades, many training and treatment programs have not yet integrated the new information. Our mental health training, in psychiatry, psychology, social work, counselling, nursing or other human services disciplines has not prepared us to work effectively with survivors of childhood abuse.   A testimonial from one participant: “Thanks again for the wonderful training you provided at the workshop for health professionals. The next day I had a call with child sexual abuse as the presenting issue. For the first time ever I did not have a reaction of “Oh no I am out of my depth here” to that type of caller situation. So I would like to say a huge thank you for helping me to adjust my feelings around these types of calls and for giving me more tools to facilitate & collaborate resulting in a more supportive counselling call.”   The workshop will cover: •             Understanding abuse and its impacts •             Treatment models for working with survivors •             ‘Best practice’ guidelines •             Application exercises •             Vicarious traumatisation   Full details regarding this workshop are included in the enclosed invitation.
