Jane Birkin Sings Serge Gainsbourg in Sydney. Presented by Maggie Gerrand & City Recital Hall Angel Place
- Friday 16 March 2012 – 8pm
In a powerful homage to her partner and mentor Serge Gainsbourg, chanteuse, star of film and stage, style icon and darling of the French avant-garde, Jane Birkin, will give one special Sydney concert – Jane Birkin Sings Serge Gainsbourg.
Jane Birkin was muse to the legendary French singer, songwriter and enfant terrible Gainsbourg who was a cult hero in France with his death of a heart attack on 2 March, 1991, warranting something of a national day of mourning. Birkin and Gainsbourg produced six albums together and continued to collaborate professionally long after their relationship finished in 1980.
Birkin has starred in countless films and released dozens of recordings. Many of Gainsbourg’s songs were written specifically for her (with that voice in mind) and given that they are mostly about love – love of her and with her – Jane sings them with a very real, if understated, passion.
