Sunday afternoons at the S.H. Ervin Gallery - Rapture of Death – Book signing and talk by author Prue Gibson
- Sunday 30th January 2011, at 3pm
Where: S. H Ervin Gallery, Watson Road, Observatory Hill, The Rocks, Sydney
To coincide with the exquisite exhibition Curious Colony: A twenty first century Wunderkammer, author Prue Gibson will speak on the mysterious world of deathly imagery in contemporary art. Her book, The Rapture of Death explores art and also literature, film and history to investigate why fear of death is an intrinsic part of life. Cabinets of curiosities or chambers of wonder (Wunderkammer) marked a fashionable enquiry into nature and mortality. These were glass cabinets within which unusual natural specimens were showcased like a museum display.
Sydney based writer Prue Gibson worked at the Art Gallery Of New South Wales and the S. H Ervin Gallery until 2002, when she started freelance art writing on visual art, design and architecture.
