Legally Blonde The Musical Sydney review opening night and after party photos; MiSociety 4 October 2012
Legally Blonde The Musical Lyric Theatre Sydney – in the pink
Legally Blonde The Musical, adapted from the book and movie of the same name, follows Elle Woods (Lucy Durack), a very ‘pink’ sorority girl, in her quest to win back her boyfriend Warner Huntington 111 (Rob Mills). Warner has dumped Elle to study law at Harvard so what else is a girl to do but miraculously gain the academic creds so she too may study in the same hallowed halls in the hope of gaining his marriage proposal. As all sugary love stories go, good pal Emmett Forrest (David Harris) falls for Elle and you can guest the rest if you don’t already know the plot.
Legally Blonde The Musical gets off to a pacey first half with vibrant sequences but unfortunately much of the lyrics were distorted and somewhat difficult to comprehend due to the sound quality on the opening night. The audio quality appeared to improve by the second half when the humour of the lyrics came through. The ‘court scene’ is brilliantly fast and funny and a highlight along with the crowd wowing performance by Erika Heynatz in her role as Brook Wyndham, the liposucked fitness guru accused of murdering her husband. Heynatz, after her showing here, certainly appears to have cemented a big future in musical theatre with her strong voice and stunning athleticism.
Lucy Durack is a MiSociety favourite and again delivers with Rob Mills carrying off the pompous and morally flawed Warner Huntington 111 very well. David Harris as the lovable Emmett Forrest shines as he eventually wins the hand of Elle. Helen Dallimore is a show stealer with her belt out voice and ability to take on the persona of the put upon, comedic hairdresser, ‘Paulette’, as she wins back custody of bulldog ‘Rufus’ and the ‘buns’ of the sexy UPS delivery guy, Kyle, played outrageously well by Mike Snell who also takes on the roles of Grandmaster Chad and Dewey.
The entire cast is made up of a bunch of fabulous Australian talent in a show that is entertaining, fun, fast and colourful – afterall isn’t that what we go to a musical for?
Legally Blonde The Musical playing at the Lyric Theatre Sydney will have Sydney audiences (blonde or not) rushing for the box office.
Marquee at Star Sydney was jam packed with Legally Blonde revelers at the after party – all imbibing in the very pink after glow as cast members joined their families, friends, invitees and a huge line-up of celebrities including Natalie Bassingthwaighte with hubby, Cameron McGlinchey, Adam Garcia, Daddos three supporting Cameron (Professor Callahan), Todd McKenney and of course Maria Venuti with her daughter Bianca.
