MAC Ensemble at Campbelltown Arts Centre

June 28th, 2011

New Music Network and Campbelltown Arts Centre present Brisbane based ensemble MAC at Campbelltown for the first time.

  • 8pm, Saturday 23 July 2011
  • Campbelltown Arts Centre

The ‘Grand Hotel Abyss’, our ‘Restaurant at the End of the Universe’! Observe from the comfort of your seat this unfolding tragedy. Are we listening to the soundtrack of nature’s impending destruction, or are we distracting ourselves with our fascination with sound? Of course the question is really: what role can art music play for the current world-in-crisis? With these complex questions in mind, four Brisbane composers set nature poetry to new music. In addition we will hear the works of Sofia Gubaidulina, Giacinto Scelsi, Stuart Saunders Smith and Beat Furrer, composers with a special relationship to instrumental possibility and the natural world at large.

PERFORMERS: Hannah Reardon-Smith (flute), Lloyd Van’t Hoff (clarinet), Alex Raineri (piano), Matt Horsley & Elizabeth John (percussion), Tabatha McFadyen (soprano), Peter Clark (conductor)

Gubaidulina – Aus den Visionen der Hildegard von Bingen for solo voice
Furrer – Presto for flute and piano (Australian premiere)
Scelsi – Ko-lho for flute and clarinet
Saunders Smith – When music is missing, music sings for two percussionists
New works by Liam Flenady, Peter Clark, Kim Cunio & Gerardo Dirié (world premieres)
