If The Walls Could Talk at Sydney’s 120 Year Old Marble Bar
Sydney’s heritage listed Marble Bar has reached a 120 year milestone marked by a whole month of celebrations in October 2013. Launching the commemorative festivities was a stylish VIP soiree incorporating the unveiling of the venue’s new history wall displaying newly recovered doors and souvenirs from the original bar.
Felix Busch, Manager of the Hilton Hotel, greeted special guests Aileen and Don White OAM. Aileen and Don’s romance began some 50 years ago in the warm glow of the Marble Bar and Don told MiSociety that his bride was as beautiful today as she was then.
Marble Bar through it’s 120 year history has stirred and shaken many a concoction and will revive for its birthday month, some forgotten classics like the ‘Million Dollar Cocktail’ and a classic Champagne cocktail served with Moet & Chandon and Hennessey VSOP Cognac both of which were a hit on the night.
Marble Bar was built in 1893 costing £32,000 pounds (that’s $64,000 in ‘new’ money) and has to be the wisest investment in the history of Sydney bars. For those of you who may never have been to the Marble Bar (really!!!) it is likely the most revered watering hole in Australia with it’s cavernous interior, real marble bar, hand crafted timbers and 14 Edwardian paintings by, little known at the time, artist Julian Ashton.
