The Melbourne Cup’s 150th Year lining up for the Starting Gate
The Melbourne Cup 2010 along with major sponsor Emirates is gearing up for the starting gate as the social set gallop to the Milliners. Jockeying for its position, the Melbourne Cup Business Network, held a cocktail party to launch the 2010 ‘race that stops a nation’ at the Ivy Ballroom in Sydney.
Melbourne Cup 1992 race winner Subzero didn’t make it all the way upstairs to the Ivy Ballroom but was happy to pose for photos with Jennifer Hawkins in the foyer. Jennifer then made her grand entrance into the Ballroom ‘whitegloving’ the Melbourne Cup aloft (the Cup may only be held wearing a white glove).
Mark Beretta as MC managed to just hold the crowd’s attention for the lengthy speeches that followed on the heels of a film depicting the Melbourne Cup’s’ history. Amazing how people halt their lives for the running of a horse race but don’t have the attention span to learn something about it – hmm.
The Melbourne Cup’s 150 year history has seen the race run through Depressions and Wars and in 2010 the Melbourne Cup Trophy will travel to over 12 countries, have its own coin minted and be on an Australia Post stamp.
Punters at this do were somewhat dissimilar to the usual Ivy crowd, but when, instead of serving dessert, trays of outstanding, though lethal, cocktails made the rounds en force the closing scenes here left some a little ‘hazy’.
