Melbourne Cup 2011 – up close and personal
Melbourne Cup 2011 will again be the race that stops a nation but it is worth pausing to consider the business generated in and around this classic horse race that this year will carry prize money worth a cool $6.175 million. For the ninth year the Melbourne Cup is being taken to the people with many venues across Australasia where the public may view the golden trophy up close and personal.
Melbourne Cup Business Network’s Sydney function, organised by the Victorian Racing Club, was just such a reminder of the business opportunities that can arise when you gather people together who share a deep passion for such an iconic Australian sporting event.
Mark Beretta, Channel 7 Sports presenting doyen, smoothly M.C.d at the Sofitel Wentworth Sydney this night to a widely diverse group of professionals that MiSociety surprisingly learnt included; an adviser in diplomatic protocol, a marine broker and an adviser on philanthropics. Amanda Elliott, Vice Chairman VRC, had attendees listening intently as she enthusiastically trumpeted the internationally famed horse race – and all it encompasses.
Gerry Ryan, founder of Jayco (Caravans) and owner of the Melbourne Cup’s 2010 winning thoroughbred ‘Americain’, was the VRC’s inspired choice as the ‘larger than life’ guest speaker to share billing with ‘The Cup’ in the room. With the $175,000, 2011 Melbourne Cup Trophy glistening beside him Gerry would have inspired the many present with his business anecdotes. Gerry’s stories told of his amazing success with the entertainment company ‘Global Creatures’ (Walking with Dinosaurs) and his high hopes and dreams as the backer of ‘GreenEDGE’, which in 2012 will become Australia’s first team ever to participate in cycling’s World Tour.
Emirates Melbourne Cup 2011 will again stop Australians from all walks of life as they pause to watch/listen to a horse race that is a unique Aussie spectacle. This night amply demonstrated that there will also be a string of thoroughbred business people and organisations metaphorically galloping right along side the winner as it passes the post.
Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour will visit 30 destinations across Australasia giving communities the chance to experience the magic of the iconic trophy first hand. Where to see the Melbourne Cup 2011
