Cassandra Wilson (USA) in her first Australian appearance in almost a decade; multi-Grammy-Award winner Chucho Valdés and his Afro-Cuban Messengers (CUBA); an exclusive premiere from highly sought-after contemporary big band composers Maria Schneider (USA) and Darcy James Argue (CAN); quintessential New Orleans masters Rebirth Brass Band (USA); Blood Sweat & Tears’ Mike Stern (USA) using his jazz roots to explore rock, swing, funk, blues and world music; and the world premiere of Australia’s own Joe Camilleri, Vince Jones and Vika Bull performing Here Comes the Night: Songs from the Van Morrison Songbook. Melbourne International Jazz Festival 2013 includes a vibrant new series inthe program. Explorations in Jazz will bring together musicians at the forefront of contemporary jazz including the Australian premieres of hot new collective Snarky Puppy (USA), indie-rock, hip-hop, jazz combo Kneebody (USA) and 2012 Festival sensation Jamire Williams (USA) returning with his new band ERIMAJ.
774’s Roaring Swing takes you back to the 1920s when the gangsters ran the nightlife and the Charleston ruled the dance floor. Two of Melbourne’s most explosive bands Michael McQuaid and his Red Hot Rhythmakers and Leigh Barker and the New Sheiks will have the Melbourne Town Hall quaking.
Friday night’s Opening Gala concert Everybody Wants to Rule the World, features special guest Mahalia Barnes alongside 2012 ARIA Award-winning vocalist/pianist Sarah McKenzie with formidable jazz vocalist and improviser Michelle Nicolle, reinterpreting era-defining rock classics and pop anthems such as House of the Rising Sun, Yellow Taxi and Sunshine of Your Love.
Melbourne International Jazz Festival 2013 free Opening Weekend Events invite audiences to join the Second Line Street Party with the New Orleans institution, the Rebirth Brass Band (USA), leading a joyous and jumpin’ musical march through Southbank, followed by the Opening Celebration Concert at Federation Square and an open-air Gospel and Soul concert on Sunday featuring the 60-voice Melbourne Mass Gospel Choir.
Melbourne’s jazz clubs will play host to more than 40 Club Sessions featuring an extraordinary array of talented musicians performing at Bennetts Lane, The Paris Cat Jazz Club and Dizzy’s Jazz Club Bennetts Lane Club Sessions include Norwegian/French Dans Les Arbres, Kekko Fornarelli Trio (Italy), Mike Stern Band (USA), Open Loose and Omri Mor Trio (Israel)
Unleash the Best is the ultimate online and live rock, pop, big band, jazz and blues, world music and electronic beats band competition. With $50,000 in prizes, the competition runs for 12 weeks, culminating in a live concert on the last day of the Festival at the Iwaki Auditorium.
