Melbourne Recital Centre – The Song Company 2012 national season

March 12, 2012
August 7, 2012
November 4, 2012

* MELBOURNE

  • Love in Venice – Monday 12 March, 8pm
  • Sunken Dreams – Tuesday 7 August, 8pm
  • Ship to Shore – Wednesday 14 November, 7.30pm

Roland Peelman has been the Artistic Director since 1990 of The Song Company – Australia’s pre-eminent vocal ensemble and one of the most vibrant and extraordinary vocal ensembles in the world.  With a repertoire that covers vocal music from the 10th century to the present day, the six-voice group is equally at home in medieval songs and chants, 16th-century polyphony, 20th-century classics and creating innovative programs that cross the old divide between high/low-brow and old/new.

Love in Venice (Monteverdi & Banchieri), the first concert of 2012, will see The Song Company lead audiences along the canals of the world’s most romantic city with a collection of music and madrigals from Claudio Monteverdi and Adriano Banchieri.  Serious, sensual and sometimes comic, Claudio Monteverdi represents Venice’s golden age of music making, and is considered to be the greatest composer ever to have worked in the city.

Featuring a trio of leading early music specialists: Tommie Andersson (lute/theorbo/Spanish guitar) and Laura Vaughan (lirone/gamba), with The Song Company Artistic Director Roland Peelman completing the trio on harpsichord.

Sunken Dreams (Claire Edwardes, percussion) The Song Company will share the stage with acclaimed percussionist Claire Edwardes, for Sunken Dreams, an inventive water-themed program featuring Jack Body’s Lullabies and a selection of works by Claude Debussy including La Cathédrale engloutie (The Sunken Cathedral), a new arrangement for voices and vibraphone.  Mixing water and percussion in new and inspiring ways, the concert will also give audiences a rare chance to see Edwardes play Australia’s only waterphone, a curious metal instrument filled with water.

Ship to Shore (Slava & Leonard Grigoryan) The 2012 season concludes in November on a joyous note, when The Song Company teams with much-loved guitar duo Slava and Leonard Grigoryan for Ship to Shore, a spirited mix of sailor songs, sea shanties and romantic music from distant shores.

The company comprises Clive Birch (bass), Richard Black (tenor), Mark Donnelly (baritone), Anna Fraser (soprano), Lanneke Jones (mezzo), Susannah Lawergren (soprano) and Artistic Director Roland Peelman.

The Song Company is proud to be appearing in Melbourne on a more regular basis for the city’s many lovers of fine music at the Melbourne Recital Centre, the finest chamber music venue in the country.
