City of Sydney helping children take centre stage
14 March 2012
Monkey Baa ,one of Australia’s leading theatre companies, will move into a magnificent new home at Darling Harbour next month with the help of City of Sydney funding.
City of Sydney has pledged $45,000 to help Monkey Baa Theatre Company move into a state-of-the-art $10.7 million performance space at the new Darling Quarter development.
Monkey Baa specialises in presenting theatrical adaptations of popular Australian children’s literature and running workshops for aspiring young performers.
The purpose-built facility at Darling Harbour will house a 235-seat theatre to be used by the company to develop, rehearse and perform new work. After Monkey Baa moves into its new home in April, it will start work on four productions for the 2012 season, totalling 86 performances with an anticipated audience of 15,000 young people and their families.
City of Sydney has supported a range of successful Monkey Baa projects through its grants and sponsorships programs since 2005, helping the company make its programs and workshops accessible for local children of all backgrounds.
City of Sydney is exploring ways of continuing to partner with Monkey Baa over coming years to support its development as a leading cultural facility – including using the new theatre foyer for activities such as pop-up libraries, story telling sessions and author talks.Share
