Murder Most Foul Announced by a ‘Marvellous’ Cast
A murder was announced this week in Sydney but no-one took it too seriously, in fact, most of those present for the ‘announcement’ thought it rather hysterical.  Dame Agatha Christie is likely the world’s most popular mystery writer and it’s not difficult to understand why.

A Murder is Announced follows Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple as she delves into the mysteries surrounding the rather odd announcement of a murder and the subsequent dirty deed at Chipping Cleghorn, a small English country town.  A Murder is Announced – the book, was first published in 1950 with the 2013 play transporting us back to that era through the stage settings and fashion.

Judi Farr personifies the marvellous Miss Marple, well, marvellously.   Judi was surrounded by a brilliant cast of both experienced and honed actors married with some of Australia’s rising acting talent.  It’s difficult to target particular performances as each was excellent, but Libby Munro (Philippa Haymes) is one to watch with Victoria Haralabidou (Mitzi the mad maid) giving a great comedic performance.  Debra Lawrance (Letitia Blacklock) almost had us on the edges of our seats towards the denouement.

A Murder is Announced is great fun and if you think it is a play that only the more, let’s say ‘mature’ would like, MiSociety can ensure that, judging from the opening night crowd’s reaction, that is not the case at all.  After all, if the writing is excellent and the players also what is not to thoroughly enjoy.  But if you know ‘who done it’ don’t let on to anyone!

Sir Stephen Waley-Cowen, producer of the London production of Agatha Christie’s The Mouse Trap (which has been running non stop for some 60 years), was a special guest at the after party where all the cast members gathered.  MiSociety loved the cast on stage and were further impressed on meeting them all as they are not only very talented – but gracious and convivial to boot.

A Murder is Announced playing at The Sydney Theatre till 27 October 2013 before moving onto Melbourne and Brisbane.
