An enthusiastic audience of classical singing lovers packed the Independent Theatre, North Sydney on Wednesday night to hear the 10 Mathy Semi-Finalists vying for a position in the Finals Concert in Perth.
The four men and one mezzo soprano chosen are bass baritone Hadleigh Adams (24), New Zealand; mezzo soprano Jade Moffat (19), Queensland; baritone Sam Roberts-Smith (23) New South Wales; tenor Samuel Sakker (24), New South Wales; and bass Lachlan Scott (24) South Australia.
The Australian Singing Competition is also delighted to announce and congratulate the winner of the 2009 Opera Awards, Emma Pearson. Emma, the 2004 winner of the Marianne Mathy Scholarship, will receive the Youth Music Foundation of Australia Award ($25,000), the Armstrong-Martin Scholarship presented by The Australian Elizabethan Theatre Trust ($4,500) and the Haas Award ($2,500) presented by Music & Opera Singers Trust Limited. In addition she was awarded the Royal Over-Seas League Music Bursary ($3,000 plus recitals and accommodation in London ). Emma’s prize money totals $35,000!
