MYER book launch ‘your store MYER’

Words & Images:  MiSociety

The launch of a superb new book, ‘your store MYER’, held at Sydney’s Australian Museum, was an event organised by one of the world’s leading publishers of corporate and stakeholder custom books -Focus.

Guests accessed the stunning fourth floor Terrace with it’s 180 degreee city vista via some significant skeletons on the grounf floor of the Museum.  But there was nothing lifeless about the gathering to celebrate both the book and the Myer enterprise.

We were reminded during the evening that Myer has been at the heart of Australian retailing for over 107 years.  During that time it has also played a pivotal role in the lives of all Australians – from international merchandising methods and fashions during the Depression to celebrating fashion whilst creating an ever-changing, memorable, retailing experience.

What came through during speeches and mingling was the commitment and enthusiasm to the Myer company of both life long employees and suppliers.  That commitment and passion was also on display when the writer of ‘your store MYER’, Stella M. Barber, made her speech, outlining her interpretation of the philosophy and essence of the Myer group throughout its successful history.

The book contains a wonderful collection of photographs (some not previously published) offering a vintage pictorial history of the department store and society itself over the past one hundred years or so.  Stella Barber’s accompanying text reflects both the depth of her research into Myer and the quality of her writing.

The evening was not entirely spent reflecting on the past.  Myer is currently being reinvigorated by its new owners, TPG/Newbridge, the Myer family and the Myer management team.   A vital part of this journey is investing in the Myer brand – the vision and values of its founder and the Myer family with a dynamic vision of Myer’s future.

Underpinned by a clear and well-articulated strategy, Myer’s management is on track to take the company to a $4 billion business with a minimum of 75 stores.

Congratulations Myer, Stella Barber and Focus – the book is a fascinating read and the historical images a delight.

I attended the Melbourne launch of ‘your store Myer’ book last Tuesday at Federation Square. What a fabulous night!

This book is outstanding and such a great asset to the history of Melbourne as it is to its Melbourne icon, Myer. The pictures and accompanying text from Stella Barber portrays the worth of preserving the history of our local businesses by publishing their ‘corporate memories’.

This book transcends you to the early days of Myer, its founders, the wonderful early pictures of Melbourne, the exciting fashion from yesteryear…..just too good to put down. What a great way to show my daughters the store that I have grown up with. What would we ever do without Myer?
