NYE11 Midnight Fireworks soundtrack is a home-grown cracker!

* SYDNEY

The City of Sydney is proud to announce that this year’s New Year’s Eve Midnight Fireworks will “go off” to an all Australian soundtrack – for the first time in Sydney New Year’s Eve history. The 12-minute mix of home-grown tunes includes songs by Aussie drum’n'bass band Pendulum, 1980s new-wave rockers The Swingers, ARIA Award-winning Aboriginal artist Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu, as well as established Australian acts INXS and AC/DC.

The 24 contemporary Australian artists on the Midnight Fireworks soundtrack include numerous emerging independent acts that will be heard by a NYE11 audience of more than one billion people. Curated by the City’s NYE11 Musical Directors, ARIA award winning musicians Josh Abrahams and Davide Carbone, the soundtrack aims to lift the profile of Australian music via a popular, world-renowned event.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP said as Sydney was the “New Year’s Eve capital of the world” it was a fantastic opportunity to promote our enormous local musical talent.

“The Midnight Fireworks are seen by an estimated one billion people around the world and the display is possibly the biggest event held in Australia,” the Lord Mayor said.

“There are also about 1.5 million people who gather around the harbour to watch the display and a further 2.6 million people watching at home on TV, so to have a soundtrack of exclusively Australian music is a great boost for the local industry.”

The soundtrack will also be simulcast in an exclusive arrangement with 104.1 2DAYFM.

Multi-ARIA Award winner Josh Abrahams listened to hundreds of songs with fellow musician Davide Carbone to create the final list, which will only be revealed at midnight on New Year’s Eve.

The complete list of artists and songs will be revealed on the stroke of midnight.

The 9pm Family Fireworks soundtrack was also compiled by Abrahams and Carbone and includes a mix of classical and pop music, with popular Australian artists Jessica Mauboy and Wes Carr, plus international stars Rihanna and J.Lo.

New Year’s Eve is a Time to Dream. From the young to the old, from the moonstruck to the love-struck, every New Year’s Eve midnight is a blank canvas for us all. What do you dream for 2012?

The official charity of 2011 Sydney New Year’s Eve is CARE Australia, an international humanitarian aid organisation defending dignity and fighting global poverty. The Lord Mayor has established a special East Africa Food Crisis Appeal to generate donations in support of CARE’s work in the famine-affected region.   care.org.au
