Candide, Opera Australia, Mazda and the Flower Garden
The comic operatta ’Candide’ blurs the lines between opera and a Broadway style musical and proved a huge hit for the 40,000 fans who flocked to Sydney’s Domain for the final concert in the 2010 Sydney Festival.
Emma Matthews’ (as ‘Cunegonde’) rendition of the aria‘Glitter and Be Gay’ summed up the atmosphere of the night. With David Hobson playing ‘Candide’ his superb voice guaranteed we would hear clearly every (English) word he sang. Paul McDermott’s foray into opera proved impressive as he skillfully took the audience through the opera’s scenes playing the parts of Voltaire/ Pangloss/Martin/Cacambo. The Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra maintained the strong pace of Leonard Bernstein’s music under the baton of Conductor Paul Kildea while the Opera Australia Chorus shone.
A purple ‘Candide’ Mazda CX-7 ‘grew’ out of a garden of sun flowers in the huge VIP marquee (did Opera Australia Patron, Geoffrey Robertson, have inside info here – see photo) as the invited opera buffs sipped drinks and tucked into delicious home made pate . The post opera party gave members of the orchestra and the chorus the chance to ‘let their voices down’ on a very balmy Sydney summer night.
Opera in the Domain was sponsored again this year by Mazda Australia and we should recognise that without such contemporary patrons of the arts these signature public events would be unlikely to survive.
