Opera in the Park 2011
Mazda and Opera Australia present Bizet’s ‘Carmen’. ‘Carmen’, featuring Rinat Shaham, an Israeli-born mezzo, with striking looks and dark, unruly hair, made her debut as Carmen at the prestigious Glyndebourne Festival Opera in the UK in 2004.
Teddy Tahu Rhodes, Australia’s favourite baritone, and Aussie expat Julian Gavin will be led by Guillaume Tourniaire conducting the combined forces of the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra and the Opera Australia Chorus.
Sets and costumes designed by Tanya McCallin. The wild gypsies, bullfighters and lovers share the stage with a gang of singing urchins, a star role for the Opera Australia Children’s Chorus.
The storyline of Bizet’s ‘Carmen’
Carmen is a gypsy who works in a cigarette factory. Carmen is wild, seductive, irresistible, and always at the centre of any trouble. When a fight breaks out at the factory she is arrested and put under the guard of one Don José, a soldier. Don José is a good man at heart but he doesn’t stand a chance against the feminine wiles of Carmen. She seduces him into letting her go, then takes him with her to join her gang of gypsy bandits. Meanwhile, the great Escamillo, a victorious bullfighter, also lays claim to Carmen. Don José is jealous, Carmen is fatalistic, hearts are broken and it all ends…well… in true tragic opera style amidst a flurry of passion, lust and longing.
Opera in the Domain will come alive on the 29th January 2011 so bring a picnic and enjoy a magical night.
