Opera Australia produces another ‘pearler’ in the park for 2012
Mazda Opera in the Domain in Sydney featured Georges Bizet’s ‘The Pearlfishers’ for its 2012 showpiece attracting 10,000 opera devotees, ‘first timers’ and those who just love a picnic on the grass with Sydney’s music in the park series.

Actors, presenters, and theatre stars shone as they walked the red carpet into the opulent and flower bedecked Mazda VIP Marquee to mix and mingle with other special guests, Opera Australia supporters and sponsors for the pre-performance function.

The ‘Pearlfishers’ Mazda held centre stage parked amid a floral garden with guests socially buzzing from one group to the next while enjoying the fabulous hospitality on offer.

Samantha Tolj from Packed to the Rafters, AJ Rogers , Lucy Maunder of Dr Zhivago fame, Blake Bowden, Sydney Councillor Phillip Black, Tony and Amanda Bilson were amongst a star studded guest list.

The Pearlfishers is set on  the shores of the Indian Ocean but it was the shores of our Pacific Ocean that witnessed  the build up in the park for this musical occasion, now in its thirtieth season.  Musical explorers streamed in from all parts of Sydney fully equipped for  an ‘all weather’ picnic in the green ‘concert hall’ that Sydney’s Domain is annually transformed into.

Opera Australia orchestra and ensemble delivered their internationally recognised, superb standard of production with The Pearlfishers casting forth the stellar line-up of Lorina Gore (Leila),  Henry Choo (Nadir) and Luke Gabbedy (Zurga).

‘The Pearlfishers’ is a  story of drama and hot blooded passion and fortunately Sydney’s dreary and cool summer took a break delivering an unusually starry and warm Sydney night.

Sydney’s annual ‘Pop-Up’ Opera again enlisted rapturous applause from the huge crowd and again, succeeded in spreading the good word – opera can be dazzling, dramatic and a fantastic experience.

Post the performance many of us were invited back to the Mazda marquee for an after party where members of the cast, orchestra and choir joined in to relax and chat the night away.

MiSociety is missing you already and is eagerly anticipating the 2013 production.
