Picasso Exhibition AGNSW Opening Night, Sydney 2011

Picasso’s Picasso – Capon Capon – applause applause
Picasso’s Picasso is how Edmund Capon, Director of the AGNSW, described this monumental exhibition to the 2,000 guests at the opening night event held to mark this historical art show in Sydney.

Such is the magnetic drawing power of this Picasso exhibition it caused some cross ‘politicianisation’ at the opening party.  Complimentary plaudits flowed from the podium between guest speakers, Simon Crean, the Labour federal Minister for the Arts, and Barry O’Farrell, the Liberal Premier of New South Wales.  Barry O’Farrell even had a congratulatory word for the also present Sydney Lord Mayor, ‘Independent’ Clover Moore.

The Art Gallery of New South Wales was naturally themed Picasso for the opening ‘do’.  Harlequined Jesters mingled with ‘framed’ French mime artists and a juggler that got a little close to one particular very valuable work.  Cubism body painted live statues stood quietly aside as the grand foyer of the AGNSW filled to capacity.

Picasso – The Masterpieces exhibition is on loan from the Musee National Picasso, Paris and has been curated by their Director Anne Baldassari.  The ‘Musee’ gallery is currently undergoing renovations which helped to facilitate the opportunity for this exhibition to take place in Australia.

Edmund Capon, who is soon to relinquish his Director’s post after 30 years, said “It is always good to go out on an upward trajectory and this exhibition could hardly be more – upwards”.  Edmund has also gone on record as saying that “he doubts there will ever be a superior Picasso exhibition in Australia and it will be hard for any exhibition to beat this one”.   Many people are currently saying similar about Edmund himself and his time at the Gallery.

Picasso at the AGNSW exhibition is being described by those who have already seen it as a potential “life changer” – MiSociety’s viewing of the exhibition puts us in total agreement.

Picasso at the Art Gallery of NSW is showing until 25 March 2012
