Rockin’ it at the Portsea Polo 2011 in Melbourne
Portsea Polo in its early days many years ago, was an event people attended dressed in rather casual attire, they set up an esky out of the boot of their car and enjoyed a summer picnic on the grass. Today, the Portsea Polo’s popularity and demand has increased to the level that it has now graduated into a star-studded, ultra glam and luxurious event on the Melbourne social calendar.
Whether you come dressed up to the max or casually chic, you will fit in at the Stella Artois Portsea Polo. The 2011 polo at Portsea was held on the 8th of January 2011 and blessed by a blissful Victorian coastal summer’s day. For some it may have been a tad on the warm side as many faces glistened with perspiration (from the excitement too no doubt). The promo girls from Michael Klim’s skin care range ‘Milk’ we’re handing out sunscreen to ensure that the arriving guests were going to be sun smart and ready for the big day. As it’s obvious to see from our photos, the Portsea Polo isn’t just about watching a polo match! The Portsea Polo is similar to the Spring Racing Carnival in that for those who attend it’s really all about the fashions, the drinking, the socialising and the consumption of gourmet food in all its abundance.
Rosetta Musial, my photographer and I (Stephanie Ryan-Smith) enjoyed the comfort and hospitality of many of the marquees, spreading ourselves around as much as humanly possible throughout the day and wow we certainly met some fabulous people in the process. What can I say - just couldn’t turn down a cone of duck liver parfait or glass of Moet either along the way now could I? We nominated the ‘Rock The Polo’ marquee, run by ECG Presents (who also happens to run the Werribee Mansion ‘Christmas Polo’) our favourite place to mingle. There was plenty going on at ‘The Rock’ with a great mix of vibrant people along with the odd celebrity or three. Wayne Carey and Steve Febey (AFL emeritus super stars) seemed relaxed and demure against Andrew Morello, the winner of the 2009 series of ‘The Apprentice’, who was the life of the party with his entourage of sexy looking lady friends. I happen to spot Aussie super model Jessica Hart walk by with her friends and later I briefly caught up with Jessica’s equally gorgeous model sister, Ashley Hart, in the company of her fellow ‘Chadwick Models’ pal, the glamorous Kasia Z. There was also a great bunch of fun and very delightful ladies at the ‘Murdoch Children’s Research Institute’ marquee whose company I would have loved to have enjoyed a while longer.
There was a fairly even ratio of sensible ladies wearing elegant flats and those ambitious enough to be wearing high heels on such a hot day (like me!). With ladies and gents alike, the ratio of quirky dress sense to conservative and traditional wear was also very even. It’s great to see the old polo traditions remain alongside new fashion trends all blending in with lots of colour and vibrancy. Melbourne is famous for its pride in great fashion for events and it was clear to see that the Portsea Polo for 2011 was no exception.
