Black and white is always stylish and this year’s line-up of entrants for the Derby Day Fashions on the Field were certainly that.

There were creations as diverse as a dress “mum bought in Paris 30 years ago” to original designs to two girls who put together their (fabulous) outfits the night before. Great to see the guys increasingly ‘strutting the boards’ as well.

The field was large and competition tough but Laura Gleich and Liam McKesser galloped home and took out the titles.  Congratulations to you both.

I dropped into the Sydney Confidential Fashions on the Field Marquee on Derby day at Royal Randwick to snap some of the competitors in the best dressed competition.  Editor of the Confidential pages in the Daily Telegraph, Annette Sharp, was one of the judges.  There were some very interesting fashions with many of the girls giving  vintage clothes a modern twist.

The winner Laura Gleich was my choice from the outset.

Royal Garden Party Derby Day Royal Randwick

The inaugural Royal Garden Party on Derby Day filled early with seating and tables very quickly claimed and jealously guarded.  The Royal brother to the original Garden Party this new enclosure with its cushioned lounges and marquees has a nicer feel (and extra comfort) but one would need to be there first up to gain a poll position.

The ‘punters’ at this party were out to have fun with friends with the thrill of horse racing throw in.  Each race on the massive screen in this party area created huge excitement and it did appear that everyone here was backing only winners.

Seems the style message for young racegoers of ‘if you would wear it to a bar at night – do not wear it to the races’ is finally filtering through.  Congratulations girls and boys at the Royal Garden Party you looked great.  Outfits were diverse, individual and stylish with most adhering to the black and white tradition.

If you missed last Saturday’s Fashions on the Field and the Royal Garden Party, fear not it’s on again next Saturday.
