David Jones, Fashions on the Field and Emirates’ winning start to Royal Randwick’s Autumn Carnival
David Jones Derby Day saw day one, of Royal Randwick’s 2010 Autumn Carnival in Sydney, bathed in black, white and brilliant sunshine.
Fashions on the Field was of an excellent standard this year with most girls and guys following the ‘rules’ with a strong showing towards classic racing attire.
A huge floral wall was the backdrop for the David Jones Marque which was well and truly buzzing by the time we arrived Guests may have been attired in monochrome but they were a colourful collection of Sydney’s social set, fashion designers and racing identities. Fashionistas tottered around in sky high designer shoes, balancing their glasses of Moet whilst chattering between their friends and their mobiles.
David Jones’ stunning Megan Gale introduced leading ladies of the track and D.J.s Racing Ambassadors Gai Waterhouse and Emma Freedman to share their ‘sure fire’ winners for the day.
Amongst the celebrity guests was cricketer, Michael Clarke. Even though Michael has been somewhat hounded by the media of late he took the time out with MiSociety, keen to chat outside a 30 second television grab.
Fortunately it was not far to trot to the Emirates Marquee next door and many guests made the pilgrimage between the two. The always very stylish Emirates Marquee did not disappoint with the theme for 2010 being ‘Bollywood’. Layne Beachley, Kirk Pengilly, Shannon Noll and the always beaming Kamahl were amongst those ‘High Teaing’. Bo Derek popped in scoring at 10 by most observers.
Very sadly Lady Sonia was not amongst us this year but she was in the minds of many and congratulations to the AJC for dedicating a race ‘The Lady Sonia McMahon Memorial Stakes’ to her memory.
