Russian Ressurection Film Festival for 2011 showing great film of many genres and touring nationally
‘ELENA’, directed by Andrei Zviagintsev, launched this year’s Russian Resurrection Film Festival in Sydney and it seemed many Elena namesakes graced the official After Party at the Coachmen Restaurant although unlike the principle character of the movie none of the ‘Elenas’ were seen committing murder on the night.
The Russian Resurrection Film Festival is currently the only national event celebrating Russian culture in Australia and amazingly the largest Festival of Russian Cinema outside of Russia itself. Quality films and unforgettable opening night parties have become synonymous with the Russian Resurrection annual event and the 2011 Festival was no exception.
ELENA, a Special Jury Prize Cannes Film Festival winner in 2011, has a very slow rhythm, at times almost static, but it holds the viewer’s interest as it explores a contemporary tale revolving around good, evil and the invasion of barbarians through the focus on one family and the moral dilemmas of its main character Elena.
Russian Vodka was the cutely apt password to allow entry into an After Party that was everything you might wish for when Russian folk organise downtime – traditional Russian food, plenty of drink and some exuberant dancing. As two hundred invited guests filled the 150 year old Coachman building the fun was on but there was no shortage of review and debate amongst guests about the opening night movie which MiSociety has noted in the past is not always the case with some other film festivals.
The Russian Resurrection Film Festival in Sydney in 2011 runs until 14 September screening some of the great Russian films of recent times including a number of Australian and International premieres and the opportunity to meet with Russian film makers and actors. Well worth getting involved in. Further details on RRFF 2011 and Russian Resurrection Film Festival 2011 website
