Slide Bar is putting caberet back on the map in Sydney
Slide Bar lit their flames and threw open their huge bronzed doors for a party to showcase their 2010 line-up of music, burlesque and caberet – and it turned out to be a do to ignite anyone’s fire.
Outside in Oxford Street, Sydney was it’s usual February steam bath. Inside the coolest bar in town the initial icey Smirnoff cocktail hardly hit the sides as the cute barman lined up the yum MUMM and the James Boags as chasers.
We hadn’t realized initially what a treat we were in for here. We started to get the drift when Adam Mada approached us. He caught us out initially with his ‘magic’ act but then passed on the goss about his role on Channel 9’s new show ‘The Real Hustle’.
The ‘Slide’ show was hosted by Yumi Stymes, who will appear soon on Ch 10’s ‘The Circle’. Act followed act of creativity, diversity and sheer talent. One of Oz’s most respected performers, Barry Crocker, ‘Sinatraed’ off the show with burlesque act ‘Risque’ as the closer. In between we were bedazzled with the Super Supremes, an el’Circo performance and with ‘Vampire Stories’ weaving their way around a pole, to name just a few. Former ‘front lady’ for Aussie band Machine Gun Fellatio, Christa Hughes’ gigantic voice bought the place to a standstill but not for long as the party powered on well into the night. with DJ Beth Yen.
At a time in Sydney when live music and performance is being sidelined in favour of just the electronic stuff, Slide is putting the ‘E’ back into entertainment – and doing it with huge pizzazz. Long live Slide! www.slide.com.au
