Screen Café Presents Son of a Lion, a Documentary by Benjamin Gilmour
- Monday 7 October 2013 at 7pm
- Riverside Theatres
Son of a Lion is a remarkable tale of an apprentice gunsmith told by an Australian film-maker and Pakistani villagers, and comes to Riverside Theatres on Monday 7 October 2013.
The lion of Benjamin Gilmour’s film title is an old Afghan who was once a mujahideen and won’t let anyone forget it – his son, least of all.
Now he’s a gunsmith in a Pakistan town on the North-West Frontier and his 11-year-old boy, Niaz, is his reluctant apprentice. He spends his days patiently mastering the intricacies of his father’s AK-47s when he would much rather be at school learning to read and write. He is not interested in following in his father’s footsteps by becoming a gun maker, he wants an education.
Son of a Lion is a remarkable yet unassuming film, made by Gilmour, an Australian film-making novice, under the most trying conditions. Working without a permit in a Pashtun tribal area where film is seen by many as a suspect medium, he filmed with a small digital camera and disguised himself as a Pashtun.
