An Evening with Johnnie Walker – Talking the Walking (and Riding) Story
Johnnie Walker Scotch Whiskey pulled together the likes of Steve Waugh, Grant Hackett and Tim Cope, on stage with host, Peter Fitzsimmons to let us in on some of their stories from life.
Steve Waugh, one of Australia’s great cricket legends, along with Olympian Grant Hackett were the iconic names most known to the crowd and whose tales, naturally, were of great interest to all, but it was Tim Cope who really captured the imagination and interest of the audience.
Tim Cope is the extraordinary young man who completed an epic six year, 10,000km horseback journey from Mongolia to Hungary - following in the steps of Genghis Khan. Tim and I had met for the first time a couple of years ago, not long after he’d (quietly) returned from his history making ride.
At our initial meeting back then, I had asked the softly spoken adventurer what had inspired him and he had simply shrugged his shoulders and replied “always wanted to do it so I did”. I’d had a lengthy chat with Tim that night and had come away so very impressed by this humble Australian who had had the fortitude to achieve what he did whilst still holding such personal grace. Have to say I was quite chuffed that Tim remembered me again immediately and when I asked how his book was coming along his shy smile and answer led me to believe he was finding it tougher going than his 10,000km ride.
Tim Cope’s personally filmed documentary ‘The Trail of Genghis Khan’ was a huge success so look out for his book later in 2011 – it’s sure to be an inspiring read.
