Summer, the Beach and Beach Style – Vintage Swimwear

November 19, 2011toNovember 20, 2011

Sydney’s gorgeous Manly Art Gallery & Museum is hosting two special ‘vintage’ events to celebrate Australians’ love of the beach – and our love of style!

  • Saturday 19 November 2-4pm – Kids’ Vintage Swimwear Workshop
  • Sunday 20 November 2-4pm – Show off your vintage swimwear

Kids’ Vintage Swimwear Workshop: Saturday 19 November 2-4pm:
Kids aged 7-12 are invited to be part of the Kids’ Vintage Swimwear Workshop, a retro dress-up and art-making session which promises fun, fashion and fantasy. Kids can play with the specially made retro cozzies from the dress-up box, then make their own pictures of beach time fun in the painting workshop. Cost is $15 Bookings are essential on 9976 1421.

Bring in your vintage beachwear & share stories of your favourite retro gems: Sunday 20 November 2-4pm:
Everyone’s invited! Have your special pieces valued by the experts: Margot Riley, Fashion Historian from the State Library of NSW, and On the Beach exhibition curators Sarah Johnson and Lorraine Foster.
Take a trip down memory lane, spot your old childhood swimmers amongst the vintage gems, and join the team for a spot of tea and a retro chit-chat about the sometimes daggy, often glamorous swimwear of the past. A free event.

“Manly Art Gallery & Museum has currently over 1300 items in its swimwear collection, representing an important archive of the development of beach fashion, changes in fabric technology and shifting social attitudes to swimming, public bathing, modesty and representations of the male and female body,” said Mayor of Manly, Councillor Jean Hay.
Situated on the shores of Manly Cove close to Manly Wharf and Manly’s famous surf beach, Manly Art Gallery & Museum has been open since 1924 and has always celebrated the local community’s connections to beach culture.

Entry to the ‘On The Beach’ exhibition is free.

The exhibition will run until 25 August 2012.
